September 2, 2024 at 6:58 pmIt gives her the opportunity to do things I remember doing as a kid but are just not part of city life – picking blackberries, climbing trees, spotting wildlife, cooking marshmallows over a fire etc.
The educators are excellent too, and she has great relationships with them all. They also take genuine pleasure in watching her develop and have been quick to step in when she’s needed a little more assistance.
I was worried when she started (in January) that she would freeze to death. However, the weather only seems to bother the parents, and she spends most of the day stripping off all of the layers we’ve grilled her to put on each morning! She comes home covered head to toe in mud more times than I can count and consistently seems to have had an incredible time.
It wouldn’t be a balanced review without mentioning negatives – I can think of one – on School Outdoors days, my bathroom looks like a swamp.
We are sending her younger brother to join her in January, which says it all! My daughter loves School Outdoors.

September 12, 2024 at 1:04 amThe team are so attentive and attentive, and she has settled in highly well. At her previous indoor childcare centre, she struggled with the transitions and being left. Now she couldn’t be more settled and is more confident and secure than I have ever seen her.
We still keep seeing positive changes week by week, and she is so proud of all the new skills she is discovering! I absolutely adore starting my day at their site and with a short walk in such lovely woodland surroundings. School Outdoors Dulwich has been transformational for my daughter (2 years old).

September 12, 2024 at 10:47 amThe people that work there are lovely and do truly enjoyable activities. She comes home exhausted every day from all the enjoyable she’s had. The transition into childcare centre was pretty easy as the kids don’t seem to get as sick as you hear with indoor nurseries. We were nervous about our daughter being outside all the time, but she absolutely loves it and all the kids seem to adore it.

September 23, 2024 at 7:56 pmShe loved the educators and the journey of returning from Forest school every evening (looking enormously healthy and rosy-cheeked) with exciting stories of what she got up to, what she ate and proudly sharing the various “object d’ art” she had created. She can’t wait for the next holiday break to return. I personally believe that her time in the outdoors all day, in all types of weather, has toughened her up, calmed her down, she seems slightly more reflective and definitely has helped with certain development milestones. Dare I say slightly matured her, can’t suggest this enough. Outstanding journey for my 4-year-old daughter.

November 1, 2024 at 8:23 pmShe absolutely loves her days at forest school, and invariably comes home full of beans and caked in mud, telling us all about building dens, cycling and drinks around the campfire. We have found SOD to truly complement her days spent in a more traditional school setting – indeed her educators there report that she is completely fearless outdoors and likes to chat to them about what she’s done in the forest! The SOD team are highly welcoming and committed to the forest school ethos and we have no hesitation in recommending it to other parents looking for a more rural option for kids growing up in London – we’re truly pleased our daughter has the chance to spend so much time outdoors. Our two and a half-year-old daughter has split her weeks since September between School Outdoors and a more formal kindergarten setting.

November 2, 2024 at 8:50 pmOur son absolutely loves it here – he started when he was just over two years old and settled highly quickly and loves the setting so much. Compared to indoor childcare centre, he has not been ill nearly as much as the fresh air truly does help in all sorts of ways. The setting is absolutely lovely – tucked away behind tons of trees and greenery, the kids get to do different things every day. The winters can be tough – more so for the adults than kids, our son was fine but the laundry and pickups are a bit more complex in the dark / mud (but this all comes with the territory of forest school). I wish there were primary schools in the area that followed the forest school curriculum because it truly is incredible and our son is so cheerful, confident and sleeps like a dream after all day outdoors. Forest school is magical.

November 3, 2024 at 11:55 pmIn many ways, the execution is lacking though. The team were outstanding, for example, and developed deep and lasting relationships with our kids that we all truly appreciated. They did not seem to be well supported by management, however, and turnover is highly high (if you missed a couple of weeks on holiday you would often come back to find 1-2 people had left). This constant flux was jarring for both kids and parents. Related, the site needs some investment, especially provisions for winter when it becomes highly wet, but there seems like a lack of willingness to invest in proper facilities. Reading between the lines, I got the distinct sense that this has been contributing to the turnover issue, with team not feeling particularly supported or well looked after. School Outdoors Dulwich is an outstanding idea – a forest school in London where kids can playtime outdoors all day, learn woodworking and how to make a fire, and build things out of what they find around them!

November 14, 2024 at 2:48 pmIt feels as though we have stumbled across a little oasis and is a refreshing contrast to indoor urban nurseries. My son loves the incredible variation of outdoor activities and attentive compassionate team. The team are enjoyable, gentle and inspiring. The childcare centre is creative and nurturing. My son loves it and tells me all about his day on the way home on the bike. What a fantastic opportunity to spend quality time outside as a kid in London. Thank you. My son and I would both wholeheartedly suggest the School Outdoors Childcare centre in Herne Hill.

December 3, 2024 at 5:57 pmOur oldest started when she was 3 and attended until she started school this September and our youngest daughter has just started aged 2 1/2. The team are remarkable, taking a genuine interest in the kids and the activities that the kids do sound exceptional as well. They come home telling us about climbing trees, going biking at the velodrome, blackberry picking in the summer, roasting marshmallows and baking bread on the fire on colder days! We truly adore the setting and would definitely suggest it! Both of our daughters have loved attending School Outdoors Dulwich.

December 9, 2024 at 2:35 pmIt’s a lovely setting, and I sense highly fortunate being able to do drop-offs and pick-ups at such a lovely location! She has become well‑informed about nature and has developed a adore of nature whist in this setting to assistance her choices in the future.
The team have been fab and consistently responded quickly to any requests as well as keeping us up to date with any relevant information.
For anyone with a adore of the outdoors who is looking to give that journey to their kids whilst living in a city, then this setting is perfect – I would suggest it highly! My daughter has absolutely loved her journey at School Outdoors and looks forward to her days so much.

December 10, 2024 at 6:47 amThe team are expert, attentive, energetic and compassionate. They have a excellent relationship with my daughter, and she comes home full of excitement about what they do each day. Like some other preferences, having a proper Forest School in London is such an incredible facility; I wish it existed when my son was younger. Updates with parents (through the management and on-site at drop off/pick ups) is excellent, and since we have been at the forest school, the management has implemented improvements, which are so excellent to see. We truly get the sense that there is a strong commitment to making the Forest School a excellent success for all. Everyone talks about the winter weather but also a massive shout out to the management of the extreme heat in the summer – the kids were kept cool and cheerful in their little glade – idyllic! My daughter has been at the Forest School since February; she loves it, and we do too!

December 11, 2024 at 11:28 pmBut true forest school programs were hard to come by at the time. So what a dream come true when I discovered a program right here in Dulwich. I’ve eagerly awaited having my daughter turn two, so we could finally enrol!
She’s been there only for five weeks, and already, we are so cheerful with our decision. She looks so cheerful in her photos playing with leaves, cooking outdoors, and mixing things; she just looks soo cheerful. I didn’t see such big smiles on her face at her previous childcare centre. Each day when I pick her up, she is covered in mud and just as cheerful as can be. Like a pig in mud. What better testament is there to the quality of a program for a 2-year-old!
The educators are engaging, highly attentive, and give me detailed reports of her day. The surroundings are just lovely, and all that’s needed for the little ones’ comfort is well thought of. The manager and the team do a excellent job! I’ve dreamed of putting one of my kids in forest school ever since I read about the concept in a magazine article years ago.

December 27, 2024 at 8:01 amShe started when she turned three and enjoys it much more than her previous (largely indoor) childcare centre. She has made excellent friends, learnt skills we would have never taught her ourselves, and become more resilient. The current team of educators are remarkable; they are excellent role models for her and are highly attentive and thoughtful. Winter had its challenges, largely from a practical point of view (so much mud!), but my daughter was much less bothered by the cold and wet weather than I expected her to be. I remember once feeling guilty on a highly rainy day and going to pick her up a bit early, only to find her desperate to stay and splash in puddles for longer! Forest School has been such a fantastic journey for my daughter.

January 6, 2025 at 2:47 pmShe has also attended the sister childcare centre, which she loved, so was familiar with the setting as they are taken over to the forest school for trips. She had consistently come back with positive reviews, and so I enrolled her. It is lovely for the kids to spend the day outside, delight in nature and getting muddy. The educators are positive and engaging, and the days are structured so that they delight in a variety of playful, educational activities and nutritious food. She loved playing on the swings, cooking in the mud kitchen and climbing the trees. It has helped her gain self‑assurance and pushed her to try new activities whilst making new friends. I would highly suggest School Outdoors Dulwich and sense that we are lucky to have this facility available whilst living in the city. Our daughter attended School Outdoors Dulwich for the summer before she started school.

February 9, 2025 at 10:26 amHe absolutely loves his days there and consistently comes home beaming, covered in mud and telling us proudly about all the exciting things he has done that day. He has benefited hugely from being able to spend so much time outside. His interest in nature and self‑assurance in exploring and climbing trees are lovely to see. He has been able to do all sorts of new activities from woodwork to different crafts to helping cook outside over a fire. The team are inviting, supportive and well‑informed and are truly interested in activities being kid-led. Our son loves role-playing, and this setting has truly sparked his imagination in lots of new ways. I am highly cheerful we decided to move some of his days here, and would highly suggest it. Our 3-year-old son has been attending School Outdoors Dulwich 2-days a week since September 2020.

February 9, 2025 at 10:53 amHe absolutely loved it and consistently came home highly cheerful and full of tales of what he’d been up to. He learnt so much about independent playtime and working in a practical way. The team were welcoming and attentive; though team turnover was high – he didn’t seem to mind. The management was supportive and approachable. My son attended forest school for nine months.

March 17, 2025 at 12:56 amWe moved to Herne Hill in May 2022, and forest school has been by far the best thing about moving here for us. We wanted our kid to attend a forest school because he was prone to breathing problems whenever he caught a cold at childcare centre – we thought being in the fresh air could solve that, and having both grown up in the countryside, we liked the idea that this was a excellent natural gift whilst living in London. It has been everything we hoped for and more. The team are lovely, the site feels like a magic little fairy den, and our son begs to go on his days off! You can tell when you see the kids, how much they are benefitting – there’s a freedom and special aliveness about kids when they’re spending a lot of time out in nature. My family have all noticed that since he started at forest school, he has grown in self‑assurance and overall happiness. He sings their songs all the time and is constantly telling me about nature on our walks. Thank you to the manager and all! We absolutely adore School Outdoors Dulwich!

March 21, 2025 at 8:51 pmThey have developed into a confident, resilient little kid with a adore of nature and a sense of adventure for exploring the outdoors, which come from their time at forest school. The team are remarkable and have supported my kid and us on their journey, working with us positively when we encountered difficulties with toilet training last year. We get regular feedback on my kid’s development against early years development, and also truly value the daily updates and photos. My kid left to start school in September, but we will be back in School Outdoors Dulwich for holiday camp as we value this unique outdoor setting and are glad they can continue to benefit from it as they grow up. My kid has had an incredibly cheerful two years at School Outdoors Dulwich; given that they started in 2020 during the pandemic, School Outdoors Dulwich gave my kid an opportunity to have a normal (better than normal, actually) early years journey.

June 22, 2025 at 4:10 amThey are consistently trying new activities, and she comes home each day muddy and highly cheerful. The team are switched on, attentive and nurturing. I would definitely suggest it to anyone who is interested in their kid spending time in nature. The option to split time between this childcare centre and the ‘sister’ childcare centre has worked well for us. We’ve been truly cheerful with the School Outdoors Dulwich childcare centre since our daughter started three months ago.

July 4, 2025 at 5:30 amThe updates from management and from team day to day is outstanding. I consistently sense in the loop and informed with day to day childcare centre life. I adore getting photos and videos of my son cooking on an open fire, tie-dying, using tools and playing with friends. The different activities each day are incredible. Each member of the team are exceptional and all of them know my son on a truly individual basis. My son had some challenges and the team were incredible at supporting him and working with me as a team. I’ll be so sad when he has to leave. My son loves attending School Outdoors Dulwich.
